Why do a 40' DC and a 40' HC take the same number of pallets? Because their floors are identical: 12.03 × 2.35 m. The high cube's only difference is ~31 cm of extra internal height — which buys you a more comfortable second tier, not more floor positions. Pallet Standard Changes Everything

"Pallet" is not one thing. Most palletized freight moving through Europe rides the Euro pallet (EPAL); the US runs on the GMA 48 × 40 in pallet — the everyday "skid"; and deep-sea lanes will show you at least two more standards. The differences look small on paper and hit hard inside the box. The GMA 48 × 40 was shaped around US truck trailers, not ISO containers: two 48 in sides need 2,438 mm across a floor that offers 2,352 mm, so the layout locks and a 40ft takes only 20–21 of them against 25 Euro pallets. Re-palletizing a Europe-bound product from GMA to Euro is worth up to 25% more capacity per container — and even Euro versus industrial is a 4-pallet, 16% swing.

Let's open up the math. A 20' DC's internal floor is 5.90 × 2.35 m = 13.84 m². A Euro pallet's footprint is 0.96 m². Division says "14.4 pallets". The real answer is 11 — pallets don't split, and edges don't land flush. The count depends on the layout you choose:

A 40ft Container: 20 Pallets in One Orientation, 25 in Two

A 40' DC's internal floor is 12.03 × 2.35 m. Line every pallet up the same way, 120 cm side along the length, and you get 10 rows × 2 across = 20 pallets, with a 75 cm strip wasted along the wall. Pinwheeling splits the floor into two lanes instead: 15 pallets on their 80 cm side in a 120 cm-wide lane, plus 10 pallets on their 120 cm side in the remaining 115 cm lane — 25 in total. This is where the question from the intro gets answered: the entire difference between an operation stuck at 20–21 and one loading 25 is turning part of the pallets 90°. Those 4–5 pallets are, on an average shipment, the difference between booking one container and booking two.

When does the 40ft high cube pay off?

In Double-Stacking, the Binding Limit Is Weight, Not Volume

Before doubling the pallet count, run this check: the payload on the container's equipment sheet sits at around 28 tonnes, but the road leg cuts real loading off at ~26,000 kg on UK/EU combinations — and even earlier in the US (details below). Divide that ceiling by the pallet count and the table gets blunt:

The 5 Most Common Pallet-Loading Mistakes

  1. Treating single-orientation loading as the default. Lining every pallet up the same way costs 4–5 pallet positions in a 40ft; the pinwheeled layout should be the standard, not the exception.
  2. Not measuring pallet overhang. The 800 × 1,200 on the label can be 850 × 1,250 once wrapped — and a full pallet position disappears along the length.
  3. Ignoring weight distribution. Bunching heavy pallets at one end unbalances the container; on the road leg it comes back as an axle overload at the weighbridge.
  4. Not planning the door zone and unloading order. The pallets nearest the door come off first; get the order wrong on a multi-stop load and the first stop means restowing the entire container.

Don't Forget the Road Leg

The pallets you fit into the box still have to reach the port on a truck. In the UK, a 6-axle articulated combination carrying an ISO container runs at a 44-tonne maximum gross under the Road Vehicles (Authorised Weight) Regulations 1998; subtract the tractor and skeletal trailer (~12–13 t combined) and the 40ft box's ~3.8 t tare, and roughly 26–27 t is left for cargo.
